U.S. Investigates Sinopec For Bribing Nigerians With $100 Million

Indications emerged Wednesday that the China Petroleum and Chemical Corp., known as Sinopec, is being investigated by the United States’ authorities over allegations of bribe payments totalling $100 million to Nigerian officials to resolve a business dispute.

According to Bloomberg investigations, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department, are investigating claims that lawyers acting as middlemen for Sinopec allegedly funnelled illicit payments to the yet-to-be-named Nigerians from its Swiss unit through New York and California.

Power Failure Interrupt Business At The Murtala Muhammed Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has formally apologised to Nigerians over the power failure that interrupted business at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Lagos.

The power failure at the airport grounded activities for more than one hour before the battle to restore light in the ever busy airport was successful.

Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, the General Manager (Corporate Communications) of FAAN, apologised on Thursday in Lagos with an explanation that the outage happened on Wednesday night.

Engineers from FAAN restored electricity to the terminal as passengers conducted their activities in the dark with some clutching to flash lights.

Kidnap: Evans told me the police asked him to plead guilty otherwise they would kill him- Lawyer alleges

Yesterday, kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike aka Evans, was arraigned before an Ikeja High Court where he pleaded guilty to the two count charges of conspiracy and kidnapping. His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, has however alleged that Evans was forced to plead guilty by the police. According to him, Evans told him the police asked him to plead guilty otherwise they would kill him.
In a statement released to newsmen, Ogungbeje said Evans who has been in police detention since his arrest on June 10th, was denied access to his lawyers. He said himself and his other legal team heard of his arraignment via social media as no letter was sent to them notifying them of their client's arraignment.

Minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, yesterday disclosed that one of his children is affected by the current strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He disclosed this when he spoke with state house correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting.
“Students who are supposed to take their exams and promotional exams have been forced by circumstances beyond their control to stay at home. I have one of my child at home as we speak. Government is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that we reach a conclusive agreement with ASUU so that they can go back to the class room" he said

We do not have power to arrest people for making hate speeches- Nigerian Army says

The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, was a guest on Channels TV yesterday where he stated that the military was not planning to arrest anyone on social media that makes anti-military or anti-government comments because they do not have the power to make such arrests.
Recall that Enenche was a guest on the same channel on August 23rd where he disclosed that the military is monitoring social media for comments that are anti-military, anti-government and anti-security. Many Nigerians thought it meant that the military would soon begin to arrest anyone that makes such comments online.
The anxiety in Nigerians grew when Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during his time as acting president, had announced that hate speech would now be treated as an act of terrorism.
During his interview yesterday, Enenche said the military was just going to monitor the social media space but it has no power to arrest anyone that makes hate speech on social media.

Strike: Osinbajo To Head Negotiation With ASUU

The information reaching nghubs newsdesk is that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will noelw head the negotiation between the Federal Government and the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
This was revealed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige while briefing State House correspondents after the Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council, FEC.

We Are Working With The Us Government On Repatriation Of Corruption Proceeds – VP Osinbajo

The Buhari administration has reached out to the US government to step up its assistance in ensuring that corrupt officials don’t get a safe haven abroad for their loot, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

The Vice President, who made the call today during the visit of a US Congressional Delegation to the Presidential Villa, said both countries were working on a prompt repatriation of the funds.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, "we have reached out to the US government with respect with helping with repatriation of proceeds of crime and proceeds of corruption.’’

Prof. Osinbajo, who was appreciative of the support given by the US so far said the Buhari administration regarded "corruption is an existential threat’’ that must be dealt with at its root.


The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has described the war on corruption in Nigeria as almost lost, saying a lot needs to be done to revive it.

Speaking with journalists at a luncheon in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr. Magu said corruption was fighting back.

“The way we are going we have already failed. I am telling you we have almost failed. It is almost lost. The battle against corruption is not only evil, it is a poison,” the chairman said.

He however added that despite the challenges, a lot of successes had been recorded by the commission, between January and August 2017.

“Regardless of the challenges that we have faced and continue to face, I am happy to report that we are making progress,” he said.

Buhari Award $5.8 Billion Mambila Dam Power Plant Contract To Chinese State Firm

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria has approved the construction of a $5.8 billion hydroelectric power plant by a Chinese state firm, the power minister said on Wednesday, the latest in a series of Chinese deals since the project was first envisioned decades ago.

The project, if completed, could provide a much needed source of energy for Nigeria. Despite its wealth of crude oil, Africa’s largest economy has long struggled with rickety power infrastructure, leaving many homes and businesses dependent on costly and inefficient fuel-powered generators.

The 3,050 megawatt (MW) Mambilla hydroelectric plant has been planned for over three decades. Various administrations have pledged to begin work, signing contracts and memoranda of understanding but next to nothing has been done.

Resident Doctors Issues Strike Notice

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARDs), has issued a nationwide strike notice effective Sept. 4.

Dr Olusegun Olaopa, the President of NARDs, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, announced this on Wednesday in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

Olaopa said that the resident doctors would commence an indefinite industrial action on Monday to press home their demands.

According to him, the action is sequel to a statement signed by Drs John Onyebueze and Aneke Emmanuel, National President and Secretary of NARDs, respectively.

The statement said that it was resolved at the NEC meeting of NARDs held in Abuja on Aug. 26 to embark on the strike.

Lagos Begins Compulsory Computerized Vehicle Inspection

Lagos state government has announced commencement of computerized vehicle inspection service to determine the road-worthiness of vehicles in the state.

The new inspection service enables road users to know the status of their vehicles by going through series of tests.
Managing Director of Lagos State Computerized Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS), Segun Obayendo, noted that “We were unpopular when we started official operation in March 2017.”

“We encountered quite a lot of cynicism and skepticism as people had issues copping with the change in the price for inspection or wondered whether their vehicle will fail or pass.

Britain To Cut Its Foreign Aid Money To Nigeria By 50%

Britain has halved the amount of money given to Nigeria in humanitarian aid, saying the country's government must "step up and do more" to stop Boko Haram extremists.

It follows a joint visit by Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, and Priti Patel, the International Development Secretary, to Nigeria to see the UK’s response to the humanitarian crisis, where they saw how British military had been training Nigerian soldiers to fight militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Last night the Government announced £200million of aid funding for the four years from 2018 to 2022. It amounts to £50million per year, half the amount given for 2017.

Ms Patel said: "My job isn't just to give aid and give money, my job is to make sure that money goes further and that we leverage that with the Nigerian government to make them step up and do more."

The emergency aid money has been pledged to save lives and rebuild parts of Nigeria destroyed by Boko Haram, the Government has announced.

Soldiers Kill 82 Boko Haram Terrorists, Rescue 468 Hostages In Borno, Yobe


Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have killed 82 Boko Haram terrorists and rescued 468 people during fighting patrols and clearance operations in Borno and Yobe states.

The operations, which were carried out in the last two months, led to the liberation of 630 villages and settlements, where the hostages were held by insurgents, before they were rescued and handed over to various camps for screening.

​The victorious female national basketball team has been received by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

The President approved N1 million each for the D’Tigress, who conquered Africa in the 2017 FIBA Women AfroBasket tournament in Mali and qualifying for the 2018 FIBA Women Basketball World Cup in Spain.

He also approved N500,000 each for the team officials.

Uber Driver Nearly Jumps Into Lagoon In Lagos Over N90K Debt

A Uber driver, identified as Hammed Olojo, 31 was on Sunday afternoon restrained by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad on patrol of Third Mainland Bridge from jumping into the Lagoon. Olojo, who drove himself to the Third mainland Bridge in a Uber Toyota Corolla saloon car had written a short note and left it in the car when he was retrained by the officers who monitored him a while before walking up to him.

Update: Nigerian man found guilty of importing 10kg of drugs inside fish statues in Australia

Jackson Igwebuike, who is accused of importing 10 kilograms of the drug ice inside three fish statues was found guilty in Australia, today, despite maintaining he was set up by a friend.
Igwebuike, 34, maintained throughout his trial in the ACT Supreme Court that he was tricked into transporting the drugs, which he was caught with while trying to board a bus from Canberra to Sydney. See previous report here
Igwebuike said he agreed to deliver the fish statues to help his friend's decor business, as the friend had helped him when he came to Australia to study.

Police officers find over $1,000 hidden inside man's anus

A Florida man has been charged after trying to hide over $1,000 in his anus.
Pattreon Stokes, 26, was pulled over early on Saturday morning by a Marion County deputy for speeding. The deputy who pulled him over reportedly smelled marijuana coming from inside his car. A search of the car revealed that he was carrying 197 grams of methamphetamine, rock cocaine, 4 grams of heroin, a scale, a small amount of marijuana,  and a large amount of money. Stokes also had a 7-month-old child in the car at the time.
Police arrested him immediately but the biggest surprise came when they got back to the Marion County Jail and found the cash had disappeared. Stokes claimed that deputies had already collected the money, but they soon noticed that $20 bills were falling from his anus.
In a process cops called "necessary but undesirable: for everyone involved, they searched and found $1,090.00 in U.S. currency hidden in Stokes' rectum. He is charged with Smuggling Contraband into a Detention Facility, Trafficking Methamphetamine, Trafficking Heroin, Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Sell, Manufacture or Deliver, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Equipment.

55 top officials affected as NNPC embarks on major shakeup

The ongoing restructuring of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC received fresh impetus on Tuesday with the appointments and deployments of top executives across the value chain of its operations.
Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru, told NNPC staff shortly before the announcement was made public that the new appointments would not only help to position the Corporation for the challenges ahead but would help fill the gaps created due to statutory retirements of staff. A total of 55 top management staff were affected in the exercise. 
Under the new arrangement, Roland Ewubare, formerly MD of the Integrated Data Services Limited, IDSL moves to the National Petroleum Investment Management Services, NAPIMS as the new Group General Manager while Diepriye Tariah, former GGM and Senior Technical Assistant to the NNPC GMD takes over from Ewubare as MD of IDSL.

Fake Pastor Who Killed Baby For Rituals Paraded With His Boxes Of Charms.

The Cross River State Police Command on Tuesday paraded a suspected fake pastor in the state. The suspect, who was paraded alongside six others, was said to have been arrested for allegedly killing a one year and six months old baby...

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obo-Ekpenyog is the pastor of Royal God’s Commandment Ministry, Calabar.

Parading the suspect, the spokesperson of the command, ASP Irene Ugbo, said that the suspect was arrested alongside six others on Aug. 24 by men of the command.

Irene said that they were arrested when the parents of the deceased raised an alarm that their child had been abducted by some masked men who stormed their house.

She said some operatives were immediately deployed to search the church and its environs, and that they found some incriminating items and arrested the pastor and six others.

A Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has fixed September 5 to hear arguments from counsel on why he should not deliver judgment on the fundamental rights application filed by Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans.
Justice Abdulaziz Anka had earlier fixed today, August 29, for judgment but said he would not deliver judgment because there are pending applications before him. The judgment date was adjourned after the police brought applications seeking to set aside the delivering of the judgment, Premium Times reports.
"The question is, can I still go ahead when there are still motions before me and the fact that the applicant refused service?" Mr. Anka asked. "I’ve read the case file, I’ve seen the processes attached inclusive of a court order."

US Sells N181bn Warplanes, Weapons To Nigerian Government To Fight Boko Haram

The Headquarters of the United States Department of Defence, the Pentagon, has informed the US Congress of the sale of 12 Super Tucano A-29 ground attack aircraft and weapons to Nigeria to fight the Boko Haram sect in the northern part of Nigeria.

According to Reuters, the Pentagon communicated the sale of the 12 ground attack aircraft valued at $593m (N181bn) to the US Congress on Monday.

The report quoted Pentagon’s Defence Security Cooperation Agency as having made the announcement to the US legislature.

ASUU Turns Down Invitation By FG For Talks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refused to attend a meeting with the Federal Government scheduled for today.

ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, confirmed to Channels Television that the union will not attend the meeting.

Telecom Operators Demand 100% Increase In Call, Data Tariffs

The telecom subscribers in the country will pay more for telecom services if the industry regulator accedes to telecom operators’ demand for 100% increase in prices of data and voice calls, Daily Trust has learnt.
Several sources within the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and from within the industry have told our reporter of the fresh move to review call and data tariffs upward by about 100 per cent.

An NCC official, who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity because he has not been cleared to speak on the matter, said telecom operators had been making a case for price increment since the first quarter of this year.

He said they complained of rising cost of production and that they could no longer carry on with current call and data prices.

US Congressional Delegation Meets Bukola Saraki

An eight-member US congressional delegation has visited Senate President Bukola Saraki as part of its visit to assess the destruction caused by the Boko Haram terrorists as well as strengthen US Nigeria relations.

The delegation is led by Senator Christopher who is a member of the appropriations, foreign relations, judiciary, small business and entrepreneurship, and ethics committees.

Barclays Bank Installs Device To Track Workers At Desks

Managers were peppered with queries when investment bank staff in London, United Kingdom discovered black boxes stuck to the underside of their desks in recent months, according to several Barclays employees who asked not to be identified speaking about their workplace.

They turned out to be tracking devices called OccupEye, which use heat and motion sensors to record how long employees are spending at their posts.

There was a “phased roll-out” of the devices, and Barclays staff and the Unite union were notified before they were installed, although the bank did not send out a specific memo about them, according to spokesperson Tom Hoskin.
