Fashola Apologises To Igbos Over Deportation Saga-The Nation Newspaper

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday offered an unreserved apology for the misunderstanding generated by the alleged deportation of some destitutes to Onitsha, Anambra State.
The state government was accused of dumping 70 beggars at Onitsha Bridge on July 24, a situation that generated public outcry and bad blood.

The government had said it relocated the 14 people to Onitsha after rehabilitating them, but the explanations did not appease the aggrieved Igbos, who felt they were being badly treated and hated
Fashola, who spoke at the silver jubilee of the Igbo socio-cultural think tank, Aka Ikenga held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, insisted he has no problems with the Igbos.
He noted that the largest herds of cattle he received when his father died was from the Igbos.
At the event were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Ayim, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan; House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Chief Emeka Ihedioha; Catholic Bishop, Mathew Kuka; former Minister, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu; President Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike; former ambassador George Obiozor and President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Gary Enwo-Igariwey.

Jilted Blogger Takes Revenge On A Guy Who Dumped Her After Two Dates!!!

Women and their wahala shaaaa. This blogger went on two dates with a man, then gets dumped!...and what did she do next?...She burst "katakata" on her blog so the man would lose his job,but what happened at the end of the day?You guys need to read this!

A 25-year-old writer who was dumped this week via text - after two only dates - has revealed how she sought to exact revenge by contacting the man's workplace and complaining that he'd sent her sexting messages using his company Blackberry.
Not content with reporting him to his boss, Quin Woodward Pu also blogged about her experience – a decision that has backfired spectacularly judging from the amount of scorn she has received on countless social media forums since revealing her cruel act of revenge.
Describing herself as 'The Taylor Swift of literature' and 'a straight-A Asian-American extrovert from Georgia with a penchant for vodka, designer shoes and older men,’ Washington D.C.-based Woodward Pu clearly isn’t lacking in confidence although she does lack some self-awareness.
She's the editor-in-chief of Little Black Blog, a website filled with lots of words and pictures devoted to her favorite subject - Quin Woodward Pu.
In a blog posted entitled ‘I’m 26 What’s a filter?’ posted on Tuesday she wrote of how two weeks ago she met a random man in a bar.
‘He was friendly enough, but annoyingly and sloppily drunk, which is why I offered my email address when he asked for my number. We emailed later that weekend, and I met up for a few drinks, which eventually turned to dinner, and then champagne.

Why Lionel Messi May Go To Jail

The Argentine and his father, Jorge Messi, have been summoned to go before a judge in the coastal town where the player lives, Gava near Barcelona, accused of evading tax on his image rights to the tune of £3.5 million.
Messi's form on the field has scarcely been affected, with the Barcelona forward scoring 10 goals in just seven matches this season as the Spanish champions remain unbeaten.
"I am not worried, I'm always on the sidelines of all that, just like my dad. We have our lawyers and our advisors who handle these things. We trust in them and they will solve the issue," he said in July.
The judge is due to question Messi senior at 1000am (0800 GMT) and Lionel Messi an hour later.
The case began in June when a prosecutor accused the Messis of evading tax by ceding the player's image rights to "purely instrumental entities" in tax havens such as Belize and Uruguay.
According to the prosecutor's report, Messi "obtained significant income" from image rights between 2006 and 2009 on which he "should have paid tax in his subsequent declarations" to the Spanish authorities and failed to do so.
Although the alleged offences are punishable by a jail sentence, the Messis paid the tax authorities £4.2m in August (the £3.5m claimed by the taxman plus interest), which will significantly reduce any sentence should they be found guilty.
The news caused astonishment in Spain where Messi is seen as a more humble figure than other football stars, particularly his Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
"He has a very professional image, of being focused on what he does and very close to the public," said Carles Canto, a marketing expert for IMG Consulting.
Despite the initial consternation, the player's popularity doesn't appear to have diminished at all due to the allegations.

Borno Trains 800 Youths For Civilian JTF

Borno state government yesterday took the battle to end the four years Boko Haram crisis, as it flagged off an orientation exercise for 800 youth vigilante members, popularly called Civilian JTF, that have been in the vanguard of hunting down members of the outlawed sect.
Flagging off the exercise, tagged Borno Youth Empowerment Scheme (BOYES), Governor Kashim Shettima said that government was gradually setting a stage by training volunteer youths, popularly called Civilian JTF, in partnership with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) towards ensuring effective state policing.

Shettima said government regarded the youth volunteers, now BOYES, as the greatest assets of Borno because of their zeal and commitment towards ensuring the immediate return of peace in the state.

He explained that the aim of the BOYES is to “ensure our youths discover or rediscover their potentials, enhance these potentials with necessary skills, indoctrinate them into having a better organised love for their fatherland, make them conscious of what goes within and around them, train them to be conscious of the security of wider civilian population without taking laws into their hands so that they can lawfully help in policing their own communities.”

Continuing further, he said: “I am assuring you that, after this batch, we would again train another set of 800 youth and would continue so as to make sure that they are adequately compensated for their sacrifice for the peace of Borno state.

Speaking on behalf of the youth volunteers, Yusuf Garba expressed gratitude to the governor for his support to Borno youths, adding that since their camping at the NYSC camp, they have witnessed tremendous changes in their behavioural attitude in comparison to their old life style.

Nigerian Arraigned In The U.S For Aiding Al-Qaeda

A Nigerian terror suspect accused of trying to help al-Qaeda in Yemen appear before a United States federal courtroom on Friday.

Lawal Babafemi was accused of training with members of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and using his English skills to help publish the terrorist magazine “Inspire.” Judge John Gleason ordered Babafemi, also known as “Ayatollah Mustafa,” held without bail. No plea was entered, reports

Prosecutors said Babafemi is married with children in Nigeria and helped al-Qaeda attempt to recruit people who speak English to engage in acts of terror against Americans.

The FBI said Anwar al-Awlaki, the American cleric who became the al- Qeada commander in the Arabian Peninsula and was killed in a US drone strike, personally directed $9,000 be paid to Babafemi to assist in his recruitment efforts.

Sitting silently at a defense table, Babafemi wore a blue and white striped polo shirt as he listened to the hearing without the help of a translator.

Boko-Haram Seeks Bullet Proof Jazz From Oyo State

AS the military assault against the Boko Haram sect continues in some Northern states, members of the sect might have concluded plans to infiltrate the South-West to seek traditional medicine protection from gunshots.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the last few weeks have seen large-scale efforts being made by people believed to be members of the sect to contact native doctors in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, especially Saki, for bulletproof charms.

Incidentally, Saki and some other Oke-Ogun towns have a very strong Islamic orientation with a large population of northerners, especially cattlemen, already making the area a home.

According to a source who claimed to be in the know about the recent attempt to seek Yoruba traditional protection by the Boko Haram members, a huge amount of money ranging from N5 million to N10 million was said to be on offer “if the amulet is made and tested okay.”

“Recently, some strange people have been coming to Oke-Ogun for traditional bulletproof and most of these people are Northerners, though their contact persons are Yoruba. What we learnt was that anyone that facilitates the Boko Haram’s contacts’ meeting with a herbalist, who could make a potent charm would also get a commission of 40 per cent, with the remaining 60 per cent going to the herbalist,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

Topshop ordered to pay Rihanna's £1m legal bill after it sold T-shirts using image of her

Rihanna has won a permanent ban on Topshop selling T-shirts using her image - and an order that Sir Philip Green’s high street fashion chain must pay her estimated legal costs of almost £1million.

Topshop owners Arcadia Group were ordered by Mr Justice Birss at the High Court to pay £200,000 of this within 14 days, even though he found the size of her bill ‘startling’ and ‘somewhat surprising’.

The Chancery Division judge ruled in July that fans of the 25-year-old singer from Barbados, who was not in court, might have been deceived into thinking that she had endorsed the T-shirt.

Topshop had sold the garment - which bore an image of her taken from a photograph - between March and August 2012. The judge said sale of the T-shirt without her permission was ‘passing off’.

Today, in the latest hearing, Mr Justice Birss ruled that it was ‘right and fair’ that ‘style icon’ Rihanna should be granted an injunction to prevent any future similar wrong use of the 'unflattering' image.

He said Topshop could appeal to the Court of Appeal against his ruling.

But if his decision is upheld, he will then assess the amount of damages due to the singer - and how much is due in legal costs.

Nigeria Airline Operators Threaten To Move To Ghana

In an interesting twist of events, airline operators in Nigeria are threatening to move their operations to Ghana over the imposition of new tariffs by the country’s aviation regulatory body the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The airline operators want to locate to Ghana in a bid to stay in business.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has imposed a new fee of $4, 000 on foreign registered and $300, 000 on Nigerian carriers per trip.

The move has angered airline operators in the country who say the latest development is not in tandem with global practice.

Weeks after some local airline operators in Ghana threatened to pull out of the country over unfavorable conditions in the aviation sector, their counterparts elsewhere in Nigeria are threatening to do same and in this case locate to Ghana.

In the case of Ghana’s airline operators, the high cost of aviation fuel as well as a growing list of local operators being given the nod to operate among others was reason for their threats to pull out.

For their Nigerian counterparts however, the imposition of a new tariff by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority of $4, 000 and $300, 000 for foreign registered and Nigerian carrier per trip is the reason for the threat.

“If White Widow Samantha Lewthwaite is on the run she will be hard to catch. If a Lewthwaite were to be on the run in Kenya, Nigeria or Somalia, it would be a easier to evade detection than in Europe. “She would be wearing a veil, and sensitivities about searching Muslim women would be observed so she could easily slip through difficult checkpoints. “In Nigeria, where police forces are notoriously corrupt, there were reports she was almost caught a while ago, but she bribed her way out of trouble,” the news report said “Extremist communities such as al-Shabaab are tight-knit in these countries, making it difficult to recruit agents to penetrate them and trace her.“And Lewthwaite may hold a great deal of power as a special kind of jihadist, having proved her worth in previous attacks.  “As a white convert mum and widow of a 7/7 bomber, she would be invaluable propaganda and would command huge loyalty. “Also, the austere nature of her adopted culture means she would rarely go out, so there would be few opportunities to follow her.

NYSC Presents N26.7m To Families Of Dead Corpers

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday in Minna presented N26.7 million cheques to the families of the two corps members killed in the 2011 post-election violence in Niger.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 61 other corps members who were injured during the violence are also to benefit from the gesture.

Alhaji Saidu Kpaki, Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), who presented the cheques on behalf of the government, advised youths against being used as thugs by politicians.

“Time has come when youths should take their destinies in their hands by resisting politicians who would lure them to self destruction for personal gains’’, Kpaki said.

The deceased corps members were; Ademola M. Adejoke and Nwali C.Ifeoma with NYSC registration number NG/10A/353 and NG/10A/614, respectively.

“I do not see the crisis as that of religion. May be it is political or joblessness or as a result of poverty. Tell whoever that wants to recruit you as thugs to bring his or her son to lead the way.

“Taking up arms in the name of religion is against all known religious norms. Religion is, and should be out of one’s volition. it is never compulsory.”

Earlier, Mrs Justina Andirya, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger, said the Federal Government was pained by the death of the corps members and the sufferings of the injured.

She said no amount of financial compensation would replace the dead loved ones.

Andirya said the financial support for the injured was based on the degree of injury.

In his remarks, Mr Adebayo Adesanya, President of the Nigeria Christian Corpers Fellowship (NCCF), expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the gesture. (NAN)

Foster Parents Sentenced To Almost 20-Years In Prison For Raping Their Two Children

A Massachusetts husband and wife were each sentenced to prison Monday after being found guilty last month of raping their two adopted children.

Joseph Mayotte, 50, sexually abused his daughter over a five-year span, starting when she was 8, according to a news release from prosecutor Joseph D. Early Jr.

Mayotte was convicted in August on 11 charges -- including rape of a child aggravated by age difference -- and was sentenced Monday to 16 to 20 years in prison.

His wife, Linda Mayotte, was convicted on 19 charges -- including three counts of rape of a child -- and sentenced from 18 to 22 years behind bars.

The 49-year-old became pregnant with her adopted son's child when he was only 15, according to Paul Jarvey of the Worcester County District Attorney's Office. It was a pregnancy she carried to term, Jarvey said.

"Let them burn in hell," is what the son, now 21, said of his former parents in an impact statement read in court today, according to Jarvey.

The Mayottes, who lived in the central Massachusetts town of Northbridge, were arrested in 2009. The two adopted children -- along with the child to whom Linda Mayotte gave birth -- were adopted by other families.

"Their trust was broken by these two predators," Early's statement said. "Now, justice has been served."

NASU Will Join ASUU Strike Next Week

AS strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the nation’s tertiary institutions enters its fourth month, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has indicated its resolve to embark on its own indefinite strike next week.

Speaking at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the trade union in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday, NASU’s general secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, said members of the union had not been paid for two months, despite working to keep university system running during the ongoing ASUU strike.

“ NASU will commence its own strike next week, because we have been working and government has refused to pay our salary. For us, it does not make sense to continue to keep the system running when we are not being paid. The reason for this is not known to us.

Government has not paid our salary for August and today is September 24; they are owing us two months’ salary and there is no way we can continue to do this work on empty stomach, while they run round the globe on full stomach,” he said.

The NASU’s general secretary, who said no reason was adduced for their non-payment, added that “ the unfortunate thing is that they have no explanation for non-payment of our salary. That is enough patience on our part, despite the fact that we have our grouse before with the Federal Government that things are not running well.

“ However, we think as Nigerians and parents, we don’t have to unnecessarily ground the system, but if you take this our maturity and level-headedness to mean stupidity, then, people who complain that we, in the university system have ruined the future of students by going on too many strikes imposed on us by government will have no reason not to understand, if we go on our own strike next week.”

Also speaking, the national president of NASU, Mr Ladi Iliya, blamed the National Assembly for fighting on their political interest and future at the expense of welfare of Nigerians.

The NASU president, who said the National Assembly should have deliberated on issue of persistent insecurity and ASUU strike when it resumed session, described the attitude of the legislators as shameful.

The labour leader decried issue of corruption, which he said was now an acceptable part of every transaction in the country, both in public and private sectors of the economy, adding that high cost of running the country today was a result of the endemic scourge of corrupt practices, which, he said had long bedevilled the system.

Boko-Haram Shekau Appears In New Video, Says ‘I Am Alive’

Leader of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, today said the Nigerian Military should bury itself in shame because he is alive.
Shekau also claimed responsibility of Tuesday, 17th September, 2013 attacks in Benisheik, Borno State where over 160 people were either shot dead or slaughtered and hundreds of houses burnt.
The then Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman in Borno State, Lt Col Sagir Musa, had issued a statement on 19th August, 2013 to the effect that “Intelligence report available to the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Restore Order revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted terrorists leader may have died. He died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on 30th June, 2013.
“Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide-a border community in Cameroon for treatment from which he never recovered,” the JTF statement said.
But in the latest video, Shekau who appeared in military camouflage uniform, seated and surrounded by hooded insurgents said “Here I am, alive, hale and hearty. Sagir Musa should bury himself in shame, President Jonathan (of Nigeria) should bury himself in shame, President Obama (of United States of America) should bury himself in shame, and President Francois Hollande (of France) should bury himself in shame, Queen Elizabeth
(of England) should bury herself in shame,” he said.

FG plans to regulate use of social media in Nigeria

The Bureau of Public Enterprises says it plans to roll out policies and the legal framework for the regulation of the social media in Nigeria.

Director General of the privatisation agency, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, said this at a retreat for non-management staff of the organisation, according to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday by BPE spokesman, Mr. Chigbo Anichebe.

At the retreat, held at Kuchikau, Nasarawa State, Dikki frowned on the unregulated posting of what he called offensive materials on the various social networking sites.

Dikki said this plan was in line with BPE’s reform mandate to initiate necessary policies and the legal framework for the regulation of the social media in the country.

He said, “As it now obtains, all manner of things are uploaded on the various platforms of the social media without recourse to age and sensibilities of the users. This is not good enough.”

Obasanjo’s sister owns Apo building where squatters were killed

Building where killings took place
The unfinished building where security forces killed at least seven squatters Friday, September 20, in the Apo neighbourhood of Abuja, belongs to Mrs. Adunni Oluwole Salisu, believed to be the sister to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a PREMIUM TIMES investigation has revealed.
Documents from the Abuja Geographical Information Systems (AGIS) shows that the property, located at No. 8 Bamanga Tukur Street, Gudu District, near the Gudu cemetery, belongs to Mrs. Salisu.
Ownership details of property OG247326, point unmistakably to Mrs. Salisu’s land rights, but neither her, nor the former president, could be reached for comment; although authoritative family sources confirmed the ownership and the relationship.
The Gudu killings have pitched the Nigerian human rights community against anti-terrorist campaigners in a bitter debate about the threshold of caution that security forces on anti-terror missions ought to uphold where the insurgency is generally armed, and have demonstrated maximum capability for ruthless murder and violence.

Lagos To Get Five Power Plants By 2014

THE Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to raise the number of Independent Power Plants (IPPs) in the state to five, with a combined capacity of 47.35 Mega Watts (MW) by 2014.

Already, the state government has built two plants in Akute (12.5MW) and Lagos Island (10MW), while plans are in top gear to commission the newly completed Alausa power plant (10.4MW) by next month.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Toafeek Ajibade Tijani, recently told The Guardian that Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola was set to commission the Alausa project to ease the power challenges in the state.

“The Alausa IPP, which is set for commissioning in the month of October by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola will run on environmental-friendly natural gas from Gaslink Limited.

“The power plant, when commissioned, will power the state secretariat complex, Alausa, Lagos Television (LTV8), Lagos State Printing Corporation, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Office of the Surveyor-General, proposed Multi-Agency Complex, as well as the staff quarters I, II and III.”

With only 10,000MW of electricity supplied to Lagos from the national grid at peak, he lamented the insufficient supply profile, explaining that the plight necessitated the IPP scheme initiated by the state government to strategically ease the network.
