Majek Fashek Attends & Performs At COSON Awards Night

A mild drama ensued at the Oriental hotel, Lekki, Lagos, venue of the just concluded Song Award organised by the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) last Saturday night when Nigeria’s reggae legend and guitarist, Majek Fashek stormed the place to thrill his fans once again after years of being missing on stage.

Clad in rugged jersey and jacket with a brown cap, Majek who has been incapacitated for a long time now arrived the venue some minutes to the end of the event and hell was let loose. Shouts of ‘the Rainmaker’ rented the airas he moved from one end of the expansive hall to another, greeting and hugging some of his contemporaries whom he has not seen for years.

Interestingly, Majek’s song, “Send Down the Rain” won the best song of the 1980s at the event.Even though, his sight evoked sympathy, some of the guests who were familiar with Majek’s ordeal could not believe their eyes as the Rainmaker was virtually in high spirit. Still looking shabby and frail, Majek bubbled with lifewhile the event lasted.

Upon spotting highlife maestro, Victor Uwaifo who was one of the dignitaries that graced the awards night, Majek immediately prostrated before him and later, requested to perform on stage. But the audience would not allow him to do so as they wanted him to close the event. After Iyanya’s ‘Intimate performance’, Majek mounted the stage and took the audience in a musical voyage. He reeled out some of his evergreen songs to the delight of the audience.

Fashola Dares PDP To Investigate His Administration

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has dared the state chapter of People's Democratic Party (PDP), leaders to investigate his administration if they are in doubt of how the state is being run.

He urged the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to remain focused on the mandate for which it was established, saying such an anti-graft agency should not be an ally of witch-hunting.

The comment came on the same day the governor, along with several stakeholders in the state, unveiled the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge, which the governor said was made possible by the noble disposition of the late President Umaru Yar' Adua to the project

Fashola yesterday expressed the views in an interview with a four-man panel, which comprised Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye; Daily Editor of The Sun Newspapers, Mr. Steve Nwosu; a human right lawyer, Mr. Mohammed Fawehinmi and Channels Television broadcaster, Ms. Maupe Ogun.

Fashola acknowledged the right of the opposition to raise questions on issues in a democracy, explaining that the activities of his critics had helped him to do more and be more effective.

He added that the opposition continued "to do their jobs. The important thing "is that they need to investigate us. Our administration is open to investigation. But the EFCC must remain focused on its mandate.

"The EFCC should not be an ally to witch-hunting. I understand by my training that a leader should submit to investigation. I am ready to give account for everything this administration has done from 2007 till date."

Fashola Unveils 57 Adopted Athletes. PICS

,Lagos state governor Babatunde Fashola on Friday unveiled 57 athletes who have been adopted by sponsors in the state’s Adopt-A-Talent sports programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Fashola said that the future of Nigerian sports can only be built on young athletes that are tapped at their tender ages, noting that the problem of Nigeria’s poor performance in sports emerged because there is a fixation about getting immediate results.

The governor adopted 20 of the athletes while the state deputy governor, Adejoke Orelope Adefulire adopted 10, Chief of staff, Lanre Babalola adopted 2 while the Commissioner for Youth and sports, Enitan Oshodi adopted 2 athletes in table tennis.

“I thank the sponsors and it is not that it will cost you only money, it will also cost you time to help us weld together as a village and community to build our own. As you adopt these children, they would need your mentorship and guidance; they would need your protection. It becomes duty bound not to abuse them for sex or for reward of any type to be undertaken here”.

Chuddy K Abandons SQN Music Label to Set Up Kent Records

The way Nigerian’s artistes are breaking out of their parent record labels to form their own record labels is alarming… the aproko reaching us is that Chuddy K has joined the legion of musicians who have separated from their labels, he had abandoned SQN Music to set up his own label called Kent Records.
Is this a new trend in the music industry? This year, a lot of separation has happened, apart from Chuddy K forming his label, Wizkid had rebelled and formed Star Boy Entertainment and Jesse Jagz left Chocolate City for his own label,Jagz Nation, and the list is increasing.
For those who do not know Chuddy K, he grew up in Ajegunle and was formerly part of a gospel music group called Salvation Boiz where he and Wande Coal performed as lead singers, they were seven in this group before they went solo.
There have not been any statement about his departure from SQN unlike statements from Chocolate City who denied Brymo leaving the label on May 28…We are waiting for the confirmation of this.

Usher Lashes Justin Bieber For His Recent Odd Behaviours

Pop star Usher who did a duet with Justin Bieber on the remix of ‘Somebody To Love‘, totally disagrees with the recent behavior of Bieber in ‘The Ellen Degeneres show
Usher does not buy the youngster keeping his fans waiting for hours before gigs, partying and having issues with the media, also he equally confirms he has returned to “The Voice” and currently working as boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film, ‘Hands of Stone’.
Usher said about Bieber’s woes: “…I think all of us in some way have humble beginnings that pan out to be incredible and we hope…that he’ll continue to just mature but you know in this days age of social media. There is no privacy and that kind of trail and elimination period is kind of done in front of a camera. I am hoping for the best. I don’t look at as a negative though. I look at it as a teenager. A teenager having to live his life in front of a camera. Imagine if you had to do that as a teenager.”
Usher has been the one who helped in mentoring Bieber to success with the support of his manager Scooter Braun in 2007, and as a mentor, he believes the criticism directed at Bieber lately is unfair: “I think all of us, in some way, have humble beginnings that pan out to be incredible and we hope that in his transition, as friends and family who have helped him to be who he is, that he’ll continue to just mature. I am hoping for the best. I don’t look at the negative though, I look at it as a teenager – he’s a teenager having to live his life in front of a camera. Imagine if you had to do that as a teenager.”
When asked if he remains in contact with Justin, he told Ellen, ‘Obviously when I can be of help I do so. Reach out and stay connected.’ He told Ellen about ‘The Voice’ ,‘I plan on coming back.’ We earnestly hope he comes to Bieber aid before he goes haywire.

Militants threaten 'all West Africa'

Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama
Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has warned that Islamist militancy poses a threat that could destabilise the whole of West Africa.

Mr Mahama told the BBC that although Ghana had not been directly affected, no country was safe if insurgency was allowed to take hold elsewhere.

He said intervention led by France had helped guarantee stability in Mali, but the conflict there was not yet over.

He also backed the African Union's plan to create a rapid reaction force.

Mr Mahama said there had been a suggestion that it could be funded by a tax on air travel and hotels across the continent.

In January, French forces spearheaded an operation to drive out al-Qaeda and other allied Islamist groups from northern Mali, where they had seized control in the chaos following a coup last year.

Ghana's leader said the incident showed how the whole Sahel region had "become an attractive foothold for insurgents".

"If we allow that foothold to consolidate, then it could affect the stability of our entire region," Mr Mahama told the BBC's Newsday programme.

Despite regaining territory from Islamist groups in Mali, he said the crisis was not over.

"There is the danger of asymmetric attacks like we saw in Niger the last few days, and so it is a matter that worries all of us in the sub-region," Mr Mahama said.

"And we need to act collectively as a sub-region and a continent and indeed globally to be able to ensure peace and stability."

Michael Adebowale's High School Picture

I was so perplexed when i saw this picture of the Uk-born Nigerian terrorist, Michael Adebola back in his school days with his mate. What could have changed this young innocently looking boy to act the way he did? What could made him a cold blooded killer? Only God can tell!

Corpers Saved Secondary Student From Suicide

If not for some Corps members, Yohanna Daniel, a senior Secondary School (SSS3) pupil, would have been dead by now. He was about to commit suicide following a road crash that led to the amputation of his right leg when Corps members in Gadabuke Development Area of Nasarawa State came to his rescue. DAYO OJERINDE (Corps member, NYSC Keffi) tells Yohanna’s story.
Hohanna Daniel, a Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 pupil of Unity High School in Gadabuke Development Area of Nasarawa State, contemplated suicide after several months of battling with gangrene on his right leg. He had an accident on a motorcycle while travelling to Gadabuke Town from his village. The motorcycle collided with an oncoming car.
He was unconscious for several hours after the accident. When he opened his eyes, he found himself at Godiya Private Hospital, Gadabuke, where sympathisers rushed him to after the crash.
His right leg was damaged and the medical personnel told him he would require an operation.
His parents made funds available for the operation. But after a series of operations, which Yohanna said the hospital handled carelessly, the pains persisted. Rather than heal, the leg began to decay. Having exhausted themselves, Yohanna’s parents could not provide funds for another operation. Apparently frustrated, Yohanna said he began to think of suicide. He said if he died, the pain would disappear. He said he had a dream of becoming a successful professional, but life became unbearable for him because of the pains.

Father Of 3 Commits Suicide After Sack

A father of three, who was identified as Patrick Essien, was reported have committed suicide, yesterday, in Benin after he was allegedly sacked from the transport company where he worked.

His dangling body was found in the roof of the toilet at the residence at Imasabemwen Street, off Siluko Road.

Some co-tenants, who spoke to journalists, said the deceased had complained earlier that he had been sacked, although they could not volunteer the name of the company.

According to them, a co-tenant, who went to the toilet to ease himself, peeped in after knocking several times without getting any response. That was when he saw a body dangling from the roof.

They said the late driver had been living at the residence for the past 14 years without any wife or children but that he told them he had a wife and three kids somewhere.

According to them, “we saw him this morning. He said he was sacked and we later found him dead in the toilet.”

His corpse was later taken away by the police.

Obasanjo Forced Lamido On Jigawa People

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday congratulated himself for selecting Sule Lamido to be the governor of Jigawa state insisting that his choice has paid off.

Mr Obasanjo, speaking as a guest at the Jigawa State Economic Summit, said Governor Lamido has shown by his achievements in office that he was the right person to lead the state.

He said, "You people of Jigawa, once again, I congratulate you and I congratulate myself; because if you can say, yes, Obasanjo forced this one (Governor Lamido) on us, it is a goodforcing.

"It comes to one thing that you will say, you can help anybody to find a job but you cannothelp anybody to do the job. In this case, we found a job for Sule Lamido. Sule Lamido was ready, willing, able and competent to do the job."

The relationship between Mr Obasanjo and Governor Lamido dates as far back as 1999 when the former President appointed the governor Foreign Minister causing friction with the governor's patron Abubakar Rimi who had been turned down as Obasanjo's Vice-Presidential partner and was lobbying for the Foreign Minister job.

In May 2003, after the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) had lost the elections in Jigawa State, Governor Lamido claimed that the polls had been rigged in favour of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP). In August 2006 it was reported that the North West zone of the PDP had rejected Governor Lamido as a candidate for the 2007 governorship election. However, in April 2007, Governor Lamido contested and won the governorship election in Jigawa State.

2015: Obasanjo Calls For Leadership Change

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo reopened yesterday what is arguably Nigeria’s most critical issue – leadership.

“You know you can help somebody to get the job, but you cannot help him to do it. If somebody cannot do the job, we have Sule Lamido who we are confident can do the job,” he told a crowd of would-be investors, dignitaries and ordinary folks in Dutse, capital of Jigawa State.

It was at the opening of the First Jigawa State Economic and Investment Summit at the Sir Amadu Bello Hall at the state secretariat.

Obasanjo did not elaborate on his statement and it was not immediately clear whether he was talking about the 2015 election. Jigawa State Governor Lamido is being rumoured to be interested in the presidential race with Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate. He has said he is yet to think about 2015.

Although he did not mention the President’s name in Dutse yesterday, Obasanjo has been critical of the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.

He has spoken against its handling of the Boko Haram insurgency and the growing unemployment, saying it is a bomb waiting to explode.

Obasanjo said the government should have approached the Boko Haram insurgency the way he (Obasanjo) handled the killing of security men in Odi (Bayelsa State) and Zaki Biam (Benue State) communities when he was the president.

But President Jonathan fired back, saying the soldiers Obasanjo sent to Odi failed to get those who killed the security men.

Dr. Jonathan said as deputy governor of Bayelsa State at the time, he discovered, when he visited Odi after the military raid, that only women and children were killed by the soldiers.

Australian Man Claims To Be Jesus Reborn

Just when you think you've seen and heard it all, something else comes up.

A former IT Specialist in Australia claims to be Jesus and he's already gathered some followers. According to Sky News, Alan John Miller, or AJ as he prefers to be known, runs a religious movement known as the Divine Truth from his home near the small town of Kingaroy in the state of Queensland.

Miller also claims that his Australian partner (in the picture) is Mary Magdalene and she was present at the crucifixion. He recalled raising his friend, Lazarus from the dead.

The sad thing is that people actually believe this man. A California man, George Hamel left behind a business and his wife in the United States to be closer to Mr Miller and his teachings. He firmly believes Mr Miller is Jesus Christ and insists there's nothing sinister about him.

Another British woman Louise "Luli" Faver, 39, is a former neuroscientist who gave up her career to be closer to the couple.
Miller must be saying the right things to attract these people.

Reps Suspends $40Million Internet Surveillance Contract

The House of Representatives has ordered the immediate suspension of the $40 million (N6 billion) internet surveillance contract awarded secretly by the Nigerian government to an Israeli firm.

A house resolution approved Thursday, said no further action should be taken on the controversial spy project, which has sparked national fury, until three house committees complete an investigation in three weeks.

The clandestine project, exposed by PREMIUM TIMES, was awarded by the Jonathan administration to Elbit Systems, an Israeli Info tech firm, to spy on millions of Nigerian internet users. It is seen as part of the government’s widened clampdown on free media, and unrestrained use of the internet to attack government officials and policies.

But the authorities, which have not officially commented on the contract despite its extensive attention, passed the project off as an intelligence gathering effort in the face of growing insecurity and fundamentalist threat.

In a motion initiated by Ibrahim Gusau, the House said the project will infringe on the privacy of Nigerians and argued that the so-called intelligence gathering, “may not be the solution” to the nation’s security troubles.

The House also questioned the secrecy surrounding the contract award, which lawmakers agreed violated federal financial regulations relating to contract awards, as stipulated in the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007.

Three committees, namely, Information and Computer Technology, Human Rights, and National Security, are to conduct inquiry into the project and make its findings known in three weeks.

Mob Strip Lady For Indecent Dressing

A group of men attacked a woman who was dressed in a mini skirt.

The men attacked the woman claiming that she was dressed inappropriately. The woman was spotted walking on the street in Kitengela, a town in Kenya.

The angry mob claimed the dress was too short. They argued with the woman to change into something more appropriate. When the woman ignored their request the men attacked her and undressed her.

The men then ripped her clothing apart so she could not put them back on, claiming that “it was better for her to go Unclad because her intentions were clear,” according to press reports in Kenya.

According to a witness, the crowd gathered around the woman and forcibly undressed her. Her clothes were torn and thrown away ensuring that she had nothing to cover her body as a punishment for dressing provocatively.

“Most women in the town of Kitengela, dress modestly, and everyone is expected to adhere to their standards,” Aminah Wangai, 62, from Kenya told

Many people gathered to watch as the drama unfolded.

The woman was left on the floor with nothing to cover her body.
A Good Samaritan who witnessed the incident offered the woman a long dress so she could go home.

UNICAL Works Director Swept-Away By Flood

Disturbing news from Calabar indicates that a director in the Department of Works in the University of Calabar, Mr Friday Sampson, was Monday night swept away by flood in the presence of his family members.

Facts emerged that Sampson, along with his son, Ime, had driven to the U J Esuene Stadium to pick his wife who returned from Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, on Monday evening during a torrential down.

On his way back, there was a traffic jam, and in order to find out what was causing the gridlock, he went out of his vehicle and accidentally stepped into a gulley along IBB Way which swept him off his feet and consumed before sweeping him away while his wife and the 18-year-old Ime shouted helplessly.

Search parties mounted by the family and friends to fish out the body yielded no result after two days of frantic search.

Patience Sampson, the first daughter of the man, said: “The family was coming back from the stadium where he went to pick our mother who came back from Uyo and along IBB Way, there was a hold up and my father blared and blared his horn but the car in front did not moves. so he stepped out to find out what was going on and mistakenly stepped into the gutter and was carried away.”

“The rain was falling very heavily and the flood was rapid so my mother and younger brother could not do anything to rescue him while he was being carried away by the flood,” she said.

Patience said the men of the Cross River State Fire Service were contacted to help fish out the man that night but all efforts, throughout Tuesday and Wednesday morning have not yielded any result. The Information Officer with the University of Calabar, Mr Henry Eyo, reportedly said the matter had not been officially reported to the school authorities, but that he heard that somebody like that had died.

Tragedy Averted As Train Derails In Lagos

Tragedy was on Wednesday averted in the commercial city of Lagos when a section of a trainreturning from Ijoko to its base at Ebutte-Metta missed its tracks at Agege.

The incident which occurred at about 12.30am was said to have been caused by defective tracks.

An employee of the National Railway Corporation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the driver of the locomotive also shared the blame in the accident.

He said, “The rails were not aligned properly; there was a gap between them which ought not to be. It so happened that the driver who was driving the locomotive, was moving at a high speed. When he ran into the improperly laid rails, the locomotive was thrown off the rails.

“Although the driver was hurt, the injuries are not life threatening. The accident could have been avoided though if he wasn’t speeding. Both the
driver and those responsible for laying the tracks, will be sanctioned.”

14 Years Imprisonment Approved For Same-Sex Marriage

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved 14 years imprisonment for persons who contracted same sex marriage in the country.

This was sequel to a clause-by-clause consideration of a Bill for an Act to prohibit marriage or union entered between persons of same sex, at the Committee of the Whole.

“Marriage or civil union entered between persons of same gender shall not be solemnised in any place of worship, either church or mosque or any place in Nigeria,” it said.

Introducing the bill, Rep. Albert Sam-Tsokwa ( PDP-Taraba) said that it sought to achieve a far reaching objective by outlawing same sex marriage and provide punishment for offenders.

It also set out a 10-year sentence for “any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’’.

“Any persons or group of persons that administers, witnesses, screen and shields the solemnisation of same sex marriage in Nigeria on conviction, will be liable to 10 years imprisonment.’’

It would be recalled also that the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had warned that his country would consider withholding aid from countries that did not recognise gay rights.

In Nov. 2011, the senate approved the bill that would make same-sex marriages punishable by up to 14 years for the couple and 10 for anyone abetting such unions.

The bill is expected to be sent to the Senate for concurrence. (NAN)

Man Found Dead In A House Of Snakes (snake Fan)

Police looking for a missing man were shocked to find him dead in his home surrounded by over forty giant snakes.

Many of the reptiles, including a 30ft anaconda and four 35ft pythons, were slithering free around the decomposing body when police entered snake fan Heiko Rieder's apartment in Straubing, Germany.

A fire service spokesman said: "At least one was as thick as a human thigh."

Worried colleagues alerted police after the 40-year-old caretaker failed to turn up to work for a week.

It is thought he died from a heart attack while feeding his pets.

Experts believe he was only saved from being eaten as he was too WIDE to be swallowed whole.

Reptile centre boss Markus Baur, now caring for the snakes, said: "They probably didn't eat him for two reasons. One, they prefer their prey alive to start with.

"And two, they like to eat their prey whole and the average European adult is just too long and wide for that."

In total, 46 snakes, some in tanks, were recovered from the property.

A police spokesman said: "His body decomposed rapidly because of the heat coming from the snakes' terrariums. There don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances."

South Africans Chase Nigerians Out Of Their Homes

No fewer than 23 Nigerians were forced out of their homes and chased out of Port-Nolloth community by some South Africans members of the community, accusing them of dealing in drugs.

According to Diliora Ndubisi, the spokesman of Nigerians, the leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in the area instigated some community members to force them out of their homes.

“All the members of the community had a meeting on Friday on the need to curb the selling and usage of drugs in the community. On Saturday a teenager committed suicide in a police custody and by Sunday some members of the community led by the ANC Youth League leader came to our houses asking us to leave the community.

“They said we are the ones selling drugs to their children. They destroyed and looted our property and one Nigerian was seriously beaten and is on admission in a hospital in Johannesburg now,” Ndubisi said.
He said that the attack, which targeted Nigerians only, can be attributed to envy and jealousy about the success of Nigerian businesses in the community amidst poverty and unemployment among South Africans living in the community.

Reacting to the attack, the Nigerian Consulate in Johanneburg, South Africa today criticised what it described as the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in the country.

Mr. Okey Emuchay, the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, said in Springbok, in the Northern Province of South Africa, that labelling all Nigerians in the country as drug dealers was “unacceptable.”
Emuchay said that it was the duty of the South African police to provide safety for South Africans and foreigners living in the country.

“We are not asking for too much from the South African government, it is the duty of the South African police to provide safety and security for every one living in South Africa.

“The Nigerian government will not send the Nigerian police to come and protect our nationals just like the South African government will not send her police to protect South Africans living and working in Nigeria.

“In as much as we will not encourage our nationals to engage in criminal activities, it is not acceptable to us that some people should label all Nigerians as drug dealers.

“If any Nigerian is caught dealing in drugs he/she should be arrested and prosecuted. But a situation where some people will act on rumours, attacking and harassing Nigerians will be totally resisted by us. If anybody has any information about any Nigerian dealing in drugs, such information should be given to the police to investigate and arrest those involved. It is the duty of the police to investigate, arrest and prosecute, and not the duty of any individual or group of persons to do the work of the police.

“In this case no arrest has been made, no prosecution and no sentencing of anybody, only some members of the community taking the laws into their hands and forcing out Nigerians from houses where they pay rent, sending them into the streets in this winter period,” Emuchay said.

The Consul-General said that the safety of the displaced Nigerians was the responsibility of the police.

“This is coming barely three weeks after President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria paid a state visit to South Africa, after a similar one-day official working visit by President Jacob Zuma to Nigeria.

“Nine MoU agreement were signed during the state visit to promote trade and investments between the two countries.

“If governments at the top level is working together to strengthen relations between the two countries, the people of the two countries should be encouraged to take full advantage of the bilateral cooperation in various ways, including business culture and interpersonal relations. Nigeria and South Africa have had a long history of friendship and cordial relationship and everything should be done in sustaining the relationship,” Emuchay said.
Ikechukwu Anyene, President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA), commended the proactive step taken by the Consulate.

“I must on behalf of all Nigerians living in South Africa thank the Consul-General for the proactive steps he has taken so far in this xenophobia attack on Nigerians living here.
Brig.-Gen. Francis Hender, South Africa Police Service (SAPS), Cluster Commander, assured that no individual or group would be allowed to perform the duty of the police.

“I will go to Port-Nolloth personally to assess the situation there, and a team of crime investigators will be assigned to investigate the cause of the attack on Nigerians and the lady mentioned would be invited for questioning. She is not a police officer and cannot be allowed to get away with her actions,” Hender said.

103 Illegal Immigrants Arrested In Kaduna, Face Deportation

103 illegal immigrants from Niger Republic have been arrested in Kaduna state.
The Nigeria Immigration Service in Kaduna State on Monday said they are to be deported back to Niger.
According to reports, the Comptroller of Immigration in the state, Hamman Yeri, while parading the aliens, said they were arrested at the Government Reservation Area in Kaduna urged Nigerians to always employ only foreigners with genuine documents.
“The Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service as usual conducted mop up operations against illegal immigrants in the state. This time around, we conducted an operation in Kachia Local Government Area on May 26, and we arrested 25 illegal immigrants,” he said.
“The next day we also conducted an operation in high-brow areas of Kaduna North, which is, Ungwan Rimi GRA, Malali GRA, Ungwan Dosa and Marafa where we arrested 59 suspects.”
“Then at the Toll Gate, we arrested 17 suspects. Earlier, we arrested two suspects; so in all we have 103 suspects. We are going to repatriate them. They are all Nigeriens. They are into menial jobs; with small amount of money, one can lure them to do anything. We are sending them back by road.
“There is a particular case in Kaduna North where some Nigerians tried to prevent us from arresting the illegal aliens, so we had to arrest one of the Nigerians and brought him to our station.”
“Our borders are still in porous condition, and nothing seems to be done about them. I think these borders need more equipment, more logistics in terms of vehicles, communication equipment, and there is even the need to revive the moribund border patrol aircraft.
“Honestly, the type of aircraft we are using, the N288, is not the type that we should use for border patrol. Though they are well equipped, they cannot land immediately at a required location.
“Nigerians should help us to discourage these illegal aliens from entering the country because many of them are being engaged as security men and drycleaners by highly placed Nigerians.
“They do not bother to come to the immigration to register them. We are not saying that they should not come. All we want from them is to respect the immigration rules. They should come with their travelling documents and then pass through established immigration rules.”

Lagos Lawmakers Fault Tolling Of Lekki-ikoyi Link-bridge

Concessionaire plans N100 to N400 toll rates, bans commercial vehicles
PROPOSAL by the Lagos State government to charge toll rates ranging from N100 to N400 on the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge was Tuesday faulted by lawmakers in the state.
Except for their Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, about 20 lawmakers present at the plenary, raised questions on why the state government should concession and collect tolling on a bridge built with taxpayers’ money and fully paid by the government.
Besides, the lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction on why the state government chooses to present a voluminous document on terms and conditions of concession agreement and tolling to the lawmakers for approval, some days before the commissioning of the infrastructure in question. The bridge will be officially commissioned Wednesday.
In a letter read on the floor of the Assembly on Monday, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye had on behalf of the state government written a letter, seeking the “Ratification of the electronic tolling system operation, maintenance, concession terms and conditions for the Lekki-Ikoyi toll bridge.”
The letter also sought the approval of the lawmakers on initial maximum tolls set out in the agreement. The toll rates are N250 for saloon cars; N300 for mini vans, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and light pick-up trucks; N400 for non-commercial buses with a maximum sitting capacity of 26 persons; N100 for motorcycles with 200 engine capacity and above.
Presenting the proposal as a motion Tuesday, Majority Leader, Dr Ajibayo Adeyeye noted that the bridge was built by the state government and has been concessioned to Lagos Tolling Company, working with two technical partners.
By the agreement, 73 per cent of revenue generated goes to the state government, while 27 per cent goes to the tolling company. Also, 80 per cent of all incidental activities like adverts go to the state government, while 20 per cent goes to the operating company. The concession agreement is for 10 years, and has five years renewable period.
Speaking on the motion, member of the House, Saka Fafunmi noted that construction of the bridge was a laudable initiative, but “must we always pay toll on every projects made by government?”
“On this one-kilometre bridge, I’m not convinced at all, after all, we did not borrow money to have this done,” he said.
Apparently in agreement with Fafunmi, Deputy Speaker of the House, Taiwo Kolawole noted that the request of the government, as claimed in the proposal, was not in line with the 2011 Public-Private Partnership law.
He said: “As far I’m concerned, this has nothing to do with PPP law. This is not about provision of infrastructure because the bridge has already been constructed using the taxpayer’s money. So, why should we still toll a road that we have built with our money?
Rotimi Olowo, representing Shomolu I Constituency suggested that the House should invite the Special Adviser on PPP and Commissioner for Works to explain details of the concessioning, coupled with prohibition of some vehicles from plying the bridge.
Prohibited from the route are commercial motorcycles popularly known as okada, tricycles, commercial vehicles including Danfo and high capacity buses, heavy-duty trucks, articulated trucks and lorries, among others.
Reacting to dissatisfactions raised by members, Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji said the House should be blamed for not raising these concerns earlier, when the state government was proposing the construction of the bridge.
The lawmakers would not accept the blame, because, according to them, the government did not avail them the opportunity to ratify details of the project.
The House, however, adjourned till Thursday, where they hope to take a stand on concessioning agreement and tolling.
