Lagos Opens Centres To Fight Unemployment

Government on Tuesday said it had set up job registration/labour exchange centres to create jobs for the unemployed and underemployed residents.

The newly deployed Commissioner for the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, who said this during a tour of some of the centres, added that the initiative would be used to train job seekers in vocational skills.

She said, “The labour exchange centres were established in all the local government areas to register unemployed graduates for skill acquisition in their areas of interest and also to provide accurate data and statistics of unemployed youths for placement in the private and public sectors. However, the wealth creation ministry will focus more on skill acquisition.

“Interested youths will be trained in the centres across the state. The beneficiary will also be empowered with start-up capital through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund.”

Nigerians Accept I’m Doing My Best – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari earlier today said Nigerians were accepting that his administration was doing its best, even if they were doing so grudgingly.

This was made known in a statement by the President while receiving the Gambian President, Mr. Adama Barrow, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari said his administration had studied the problem of unemployment in the country which he described as one of the biggest challenges, and added that his government was working hard to change the narrative. He said;

Bomb Factory Discovered In Edo State.

Following the explosion that rocked Okpella, the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has directed the commissioner of police and the Director of Department of State Services (DSS) in the state, to commence search for explosives and other weapons and dis-arm the militia group operating in the community.

A suspected bomb factory was uncovered in Iddo, Okpella, after one of the explosives exploded. One of the suspected bomb makers was killed in the explosion. One of the victim’s legs was also chopped off by the blast. .The building where the suspected bombs were manufactured is a three- bedroom apartment which the villagers said was occupied by some men from Kogi State.

Nigerian Court Awards $10 Million Damages Against Shoprite For Contract Breach

After seven years of legal battle, a Lagos High Court, Igbosere has awarded the sum of $10 million against South African retail giant, Shoprite Checkers (PTY) Limited and its business partner, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited for a breach of contract entered with a Nigerian firm, AIC Limited in 1998.

In a landmark judgment delivered by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo on November 30, 2017, but exclusively obtained by The Guardian yesterday, the court held that the defendants were in breach of the agreement when they (Shoprite and Supermarkets) went secretly behind AIC Limited promoted by Chief Harry Akande to establish Shoprite outlet in one of the locations earlier shown to them by the claimant.

Nigeria Emerges World’s 4th Largest Cashew Producer, Earned N284billion

National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) says Nigeria has emerged fourth largest producer of cashew in the world.

The association said Nigeria produced 220,000 metric tonnes of cashew nuts out of World’s total of 2.1 million tonnes last year, adding that the country exported 120,000 metric tonnes in the year under review.

NCAN President, Tola Fasheru who stated this in Abuja, Thursday when he visited the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Ms. Aisha Abubakar also revealed that cashew farmers in the country earned N123 billion ($402 million) from the export of cashew last year and between 2015 and 2017, earned $813.05m (N284.5bn) in foreign exchange from the exportation of cashew.

Fasheru called on the Federal Government to save the industry from collapse through initiatives such as the provision of incentives to farmers to expand their trade and protection of farms against encroachment from foreigners.

Efcc’s Attempt To Arrest Abba Kyari Sparks Panic In Aso Rock - Sahara Reporters

Aso Rock Villa, the seat of the Nigerian Presidency, was, on penultimate Sunday, thrown into a panic, following an alarm by Mr. Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, that he was about to be arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Chief of Staff was said to have quickly notified the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Mr. Lawan Daura, of the impending arrest. Mr. Daura, who has been offering protection to high profile corrupt persons, using his office, immediately deployed a platoon of DSS officers to stop Magu from carrying out the arrest.

According to a witness, Prince Henry Nwazuruahu Shield, Elbuba was picked up by the Operatives in Jos, Plateau state earlier today. Yusuf Buhari Leaves Hospital After Power Bike Accident

Son of President Muhammadu Buhari, Yusuf, is now ready to be discharged from the hospital after he was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident in Abuja on Boxing Day of 2017.

Yusuf, reportedly the only son of the President, was taken to Cedarcrest Hospitals in Abuja after the road mishap, where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the health facility.

A statement issued by management of the hospital today and shared by one of the President’s aides, Mr Bashir Ahmad, it was disclosed that after the successful surgical operations carried by a team of neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeans, Yusuf was now stable and making "remarkable progress."

However, the hospital emphasised that no friend of the President’s son was involved in the accident as widely reported in the media.

Patience Jonathan Loses Bid To Reclaim Seized $5.9m

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, on Friday upheld the decision of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which ordered the interim forfeiture of a sum of $5.9m found in Mrs. Patience Jonathan’s Skye Bank account.
The appellate court, in a lead judgment by Justice Mojeed Owoade, threw out the ex-President’s wife’s appeal, challenging the forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government.

It held that the appeal lacked merit.


Herdsmen Killings: Buhari Can Be Impeached – NBA

The President of Nigeria Bar Association, Ikeja branch, Adesina Ogunlana, has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s “silence and indecisive action” on herdsmen killings.

He said Buhari’s attitude is enough ground for him to be impeached.

In a chat with newsmen, Adesina said the President is indirectly approving the killing by Fulani herdsmen.

His words: “We have seen the federal government display its might and concern for security in certain parts of the country, the question and puzzle now is why the government is quiet in the face of the Fulani herdsmen which has led to the massacre of thousands of people and displacement of thousands of people from their normal abode.”

Ghana Bars Recruits Over Stretch Marks And Bleached Skin

The Ghanaian Immigration Service (GIS) has disqualified candidates with bleached skin and stretch marks from a massive recruitment exercise.
A GIS spokesman told the BBC this was because people with such marks might bleed during the "strenuous" training.
Some Ghanaians condemned the bar as sexist and unfair. Those with tattoos, dreadlocks and "bow legs" were also disqualified from the exercise.
The GIS received some 84,000 applications for just 500 jobs.
The kind of work we do, it's strenuous and the training is such that if you have bleached skin or surgical marks on your body during training exercises, you may incur some bleedings," Superintendent Michael Amoako-Attah, told BBC Pidgin.
Candidates must undergo a medical and a full body check as part of the GIS recruitment process.

Fuel Price: Oil Marketers Backpedal, Begs FG For Tax Holidays

Oil marketers, Wednesday, jettisoned their clamour for an increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, and instead appealed to the Federal Government to grant them tax holidays and other incentives that would help cut their costs and also ensure that they resume fuel importation.

This was part of agreements reached at the meeting of the ad-hoc committee set up by the Presidency to engage the Federal Government on ways to get oil marketers to restart importation of the commodity and resolve the country’s fuel supply challenges.

A source in the meeting, who does not want to be named, because he was not authorized by the committee to talk on the agreements, also disclosed that it was agreed by all the members that the price of the commodity should not be increased.

Over 20,200 Babies Born In Nigeria On New Year Day- UNICEF

Nigeria would have approximately 20,210 babies born into the country on the New Year’s day.

This represents the third largest population of newborns in the world on Jan. 1, 2018, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said.

UNICEF also said nearly 386,000 babies would be born worldwide on New Year’s Day, representing some 90 per cent in less developed regions.

The agency reported that Kiribati’s Christmas Island in the Pacific would most likely welcome 2018’s first baby while the U.S., its last.

Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in nine countries, according to UNICEF.

These are: India, 69,070; China, 44,760; Nigeria, 20,210; Pakistan, 14,910; Indonesia, 13,370; United States, 11,280; Democratic Republic of Congo, 9,400; Ethiopia, 9,020; and Bangladesh, 8,370.

Ahamefula Okorocha Collapses, Governor's Son Rushed To London Hospital

First son of Imo State Governor, Aham Okorocha, is currently receiving treatment at undisclosed hospital in London for yet-to-be disclosed ailment.

Afam was said to have been flown to London for treatment after he allegedly slumped during Christmas week.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu confirmed this on Sunday, while explaining the absence of Governor Okorocha during the South East zonal meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains in Ebonyi State.

Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu Is Dead

Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu, the Kabba Resident High Court Judge in Kogi handling the case of attempted assassination of Senatoe Dino Melaye, is dead.

The News Agency of Nigeria gathered that the judge died in Anyigba on December 31, 2017 at about 11:40pm during a cross-over service to 2018.

According to a reliable source close to the family, Akogu, who had vowed not to sleep before the cross-over to 2018, was not sick, nor did he show any symptoms of ill health.

His wife, Mrs. Vicky Akogu, who confirmed the death, said the late judge and one-time Director of Public Prosecution in the state, was hale and hearty before his sudden death.

She said that she watched her husband’s death like a movie and could hardly believe it.

The End Of Globacom In Benin Republic

Report has gathered that one of Nigeria’s biggest network ‘Glo’ which is a subsidiary of the Nigerian telecom group ‘Globalcom’ has refused to comply with the new payment obligation made by telecoms license in Benin Republic. This was reported by the Regulatory Authority for Electrical Communication and Posts (ARCEP) of Benin Republic, and so, the body also threatens to end Glo mobile and its operation in the West African Country.

Globalcom company which has earlier been notified of their refusal to comply with their new dues on the 18th December 2017 following the failure in September 2017 of the negotiations initiated with the State since June 2017 for the renewal of its telecom license. It was revealed that Glo Mobile would have refused to pay the new price of the telecom license, set by the Beninese state.

Vehicular Movement Will Be Restrict In Agege Area By January 4

The Lagos State Government says it will partially restrict vehicular movement in the Agege area from January 4, 2018.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Olujimi Hotonu, in a statement on Monday said the move was to accelerate the ongoing construction of the Pen Cinema Flyover.

Hotonu added that there would be a complete closure of roads in the area sometimes during the construction.

He said, “However, adequate arrangements have been firmed up to mitigate the impact of the closure of the roads on motorists and residents. Traffic diversion routes have been created to ensure ease of movement along the corridor.

Isreal Orders Africans To Leave Or Face Imprisonment

The Israeli government has issued a notice for thousands of African migrants to leave the country or face imprisonment.
The migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days.

They will be given the option of going to their home country or third countries.

If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April.

The UN refugee agency said the controversial plan violated international and Israeli laws.

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, a professor of Language and Communication Arts at the Rivers State University of Education, Prof. Olufumilayo Adesanya-Davies, has announced his intention to contest the presidential election.

Adesanya-Davies made her intention public, on Tuesday, while addressing newsmen in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Ira-Kwara born don said she had consulted widely before making her intention public.

She added that decision of the Federal Government to make applications forms free for women aspirants also boosted her interest in the race.

Police Arrest Alese, Badoo Cult’s Herbalist

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday said it has arrested alleged herbalist working for the notorious murderous gang , Badoo . His name is given as Fatai Adebayo, alias Alese .

A press release signed and emailed to The PUNCH by the Police Public Relations Officer , Lagos State Police Command, SP Chike Oti , stated that the notorious activities of the cult group was prevalent in Ikorodu and Epe axis of the state .

It noted that through their activities , the group had murdered many people by smashing their victims ’ heads with mortar and pestle .
