Extend clean-up to Eket, group urges Buhari

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Niger Delta Network Advancement Programme, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for embarking on the implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme on Ogoni land clean-up. The NGO stated that the move had vindicated Buhari as a true patriot and a friend of the Niger Delta.
It urged the President to extend the gesture to the entire Niger Delta region including Eket and its environs.
The group’s president, Mr. Al-Mustapher Edoho, who stated this in Uyo, on Thursday, said Eket communities have suffered decades of oil and gas pollution.

Edoho added that the level of pollutants resulting from the flaring of oil and gas in Eket and its environs had gone beyond acceptable international standards.
“We commend President Muhammadu Buhari for his courage and patriotism in approving the immediate implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme report of 2011 on the clean-up of the Ogoni land that was completely devastated, following years of pollutions.
“The gesture shows that Buhari is a true patriot and a friend of the Niger Delta. We call on him to extend the clean-up to the entire Niger Delta region, including the oil-producing communities of Eket and its environs,” he said.
